Botox® vs. Dysport®: What’s the Difference?

Botox® and Dysport® are both botulinum toxin type A injectables, but they are different formulations.

• Botox®: onabotulinumtoxinA (ONA), FDA-approved in 2002

• Dysport®: abobotulinumtoxinA (ABO), FDA-approved in 2009

While their chemical composition is similar, they differ in:

• Potency

• Onset of action

• Diffusion pattern

Dysport is less concentrated per unit and often produces a softer, “feathered” effect. Typically, a 3:1 ratio of Dysport to Botox units is used, resulting in comparable overall treatment cost.
